What is an H4 bulb?
An H4 bulb is a dual-filament lamp. It combines the low beam and high beam in one lamp. Its power is 60/55W. It is available in 6V, 12V, and 24V. In 24V, it has a power of 75/70W.
The H4 halogen lamp was introduced to the European market in 1971. It was the first halogen bulb to combine the low beam (dipped beam) and high beam (main beam) in one lamp.
It quickly became the most common lamp for cars, motorcycles, and heavy goods vehicles.
The most common is 60/55W, but it is also available in other wattages such as: 45/40W - 35/35W - 100/80W - 100/90W – 100/55W.
It was dethroned by the H7 lamp, which is now one of the most sought-after lamps in the automotive sector.
However, it remains very common for all cars and motorcycles equipped with headlights that combine the low beam and high beam.
What is the difference between an H4 and H7 bulb?
The most important difference between an H4 and H7 bulb: the H4 is dual-filament and the H7 is single-filament. The H4 has 3 connectors on the bottom of the bulb, the H7 has 2 connectors. A vehicle equipped with an H7 bulb has the low beam and high beam separated into 2 headlights. Often the other bulb is an H1.
The flange of an H4 bulb base is wider (43 mm); the flange of the H7 is 34mm in diameter.
H4 or H7 bulb?
Do you have separate 'low beam' and 'high beam' headlights? You likely have an H7 bulb in one of them. Do you have both combined? The probability is high that your headlights are equipped with H4 bulbs. Are you not sure if your dual-filament bulb is an H4? We recommend reading this article.
How does an H4 bulb work?
When you turn on your low beam or 'dipped beam', the 55W filament lights up. When you switch to high beam, the second filament also lights up. It is a halogen bulb. The halogen gas allows the tungsten filament to reach a very high temperature without burning out.
Which H4 bulb to choose?
The choice of H4 bulb model depends on several factors:
- The cheapest: opt for a standard H4 bulb
- Want to switch to LED? Choose quality Bosma H4 LED bulbs.
- Do you need yellow light to maintain the vintage look of your vehicle? There are 2 models for this.
- You want that modern look with white light, but you don't want to spend a lot or get into installing conversion kits (LED or xenon)? We have halogen H4 models that give a white light, creating the xenon effect.
- Longevity: Do you want a lamp with a long lifespan? Opt for our 'LLHD' model. It's the flagship product of our range. A long-life bulb with high resistance to shocks and vibrations. Very suitable for motorcyclists, drivers, or for daytime running light applications.
Bosma, Osram or Philips H4?
We cannot beat the reputation of these two giants, already present at the birth of the electric lighting industry. But we are on par in the demand to produce high-quality products that meet the standards and needs of the automotive sector.
H4 LED bulb
Would you like to convert your headlights to LED? It's possible. Please note that there is no European homologation for these bulbs yet. And that applies to any brand of bulb. These bulbs are officially prohibited in traffic. We have H4 LED bulb kits for use on closed circuits.
H4 Philips bulb
Our H4 bulbs meet the same quality requirements. We make every effort to ensure that our products meet (or exceed) the standards and needs of the automotive sector. With the Bosma brand, you acquire a product with the best quality/price ratio on the market.
H4 100w bulb
Do you want to increase power? Do you need more visibility?
Rally bulbs are a good option. Please note that these bulbs are intended for off-road use. In traffic, these bulbs risk dazzling oncoming people. For this reason, you risk a fine if you use these bulbs in traffic. Low beam bulbs must have a power of 55W according to European standard R37.
Do you need more visibility? This range is a good option to maintain the same power.
H4 xenon bulb
At Pharos boutique, we do not offer conversion kits for your H4 headlights. We have a whole range that allows you to save money compared to purchasing LED bulbs or Xenon conversion kits. These bulbs emit a very white light and give that Xenon effect to your lighting.
H4 yellow bulb
Do you have an old car or motorcycle and want to keep its vintage look? We have 2 products that may be suitable for maintaining a yellow light on your vehicle's lighting. One is a cap that clips onto a standard H4 bulb. We also have sets with 2 H4 bulbs that also give this characteristic light, the 'classic gold' bulbs.
The H4 P43t bulb, along with H7 and H1 bulbs, is one of the most commonly used bulbs in the European automotive sector.
