LED Headlight Kits: Why Approval is Crucial
Since 2023, French and European regulations require that only CE-approved LED kits can be installed as replacements for original halogen bulbs in main headlights (low beam and high beam). A non-approved kit will result in:
- Immediate re-inspection at the technical control (MOT)
- Fine of up to €135 in case of inspection
- Refusal of compensation by insurance in case of an accident linked to a lighting defect
Approval guarantees that the light beam complies with standards: no dazzling of other drivers, compliant range and cut-off, intensity within authorized limits.
What are the advantages of an approved LED kit?
Compared to a standard halogen bulb, a quality approved LED kit offers:
- 2 to 3 times higher brightness (up to 6,000 lumens vs 1,500 for an H7 halogen)
- White light close to daylight (5,500 to 6,500 K) — better contrast perception
- 5 to 10 times longer lifespan than halogen (30,000 to 50,000 hours)
- Reduced consumption by 30 to 50% at equivalent luminous power
- Instant full power illumination
LED kits available by base type
The entire range of modern headlight base types is covered:
- H4 — dual-beam LED kit (low beam + high beam in a single bulb)
- H7 — single-beam LED kit, most common on recent vehicles
- H1 — high beams and fog lights
- H11, H8, H9 — headlights from the 2000-2010 generation
- HB3 (9005), HB4 (9006) — American and Asian vehicles
Installation: what you need to know
Modern LED kits are designed as "plug and play" — direct connection into the original socket without modifying the wiring. On some recent vehicles with CAN-Bus management, a CAN-Bus decoder or load resistor may be necessary to avoid the "bulb fault" error message. This equipment is generally included in premium kits.
Important: never touch the LED with your fingers (skin grease = localized overheating), respect the indicated mounting direction (often indicated by a mark on the base), and check the proper beam adjustment after installation.
