Female bullet connectors: the axial socket

The female bullet connector is the socket that receives the male bullet pin. It is crimped onto the end of a cable and plugs axially into the corresponding male connector to form a robust detachable connection. The bullet system is widely used in original wiring harnesses for its small size and vibration resistance.

Diameters and permissible current

Three standard diameters: 2.8mm, 4mm, and 6mm. The female connector must be exactly the same diameter as the male connector to fit correctly — a 4mm female connector only accepts 4mm male connectors. The diameter also determines the maximum current:

• 2.8mm → signals and low power (up to 5–8 A)
• 4mm → automotive standard (up to 15–20 A)
• 6mm → high power (up to 30 A continuous)

Installation and compatibility

Installation is by standard crimping onto stripped cable. The female connector often has a retractable insulating sleeve to protect the connection from moisture — practical for exposed installations (outdoor, underbody, marine).
