Yellow terminals: the strong section for high-power circuits
Terminals with yellow insulation cover cables with cross-sections from 4 to 6mm², capable of carrying currents from 30 to 50 A depending on the cable length. They are essential when it comes to powering high-power equipment:
- 4x4 Winch (generally 25–50 A in operation, 100 A peak starting)
- High-power compressor and electric inflator
- Intense halogen spotlight or roof-mounted LED bar
- 12V → 220V Inverter (campervan, converted van)
- Auxiliary battery and battery isolator-coupler
- Main engine-to-chassis ground cable
⚠️ A blue or red terminal on a 4mm² cable will fail to crimp correctly — the sleeve is too small to properly compress the conductor. Always respect the color/section correspondence.
Main automotive applications
The yellow eyelet terminal is by far the most used — it allows for securely attaching the end of a power cable to a screw terminal or a body ground point. Typical cases:
- Campervan: the power cable for the leisure battery is systematically 6mm² with yellow terminals at both ends (generally M8 eyelet).
- 4x4 preparation: the power cable for a winch requires a section ≥ 6mm² between the battery and the winch contactor.
- Electrical refurbishment on old vehicles: the engine-to-chassis ground cable is redone in 6mm² with M8 or M10 yellow eyelets.
Crimping yellow terminals: suitable tool required
Crimping a yellow terminal requires a crimping tool capable of handling large cross-sections (4–6mm²). Entry-level pliers (red/blue only) are not suitable — their compression force is insufficient for complete crimping, which creates an unstable connection that heats up under current.
For cross-sections greater than 6mm² (10mm², 16mm², 25mm²), bolt-on eyelet terminals or tubular terminals are preferable — they are crimped with hydraulic pliers or soldered.
