Self-stripping terminal: no need to strip the cable
The self-stripping terminal incorporates one or more internal blades that pierce the cable insulation during crimping or closing, establishing direct contact with the copper conductor. Installation takes just a few seconds, even in hard-to-reach spaces where it would be difficult to strip a cable manually.
Two main families:
- IDC terminals (Insulation Displacement Connector) — pressure insertion, internal cutting blade. Standard in telephony and low signals.
- Self-stripping screw terminals — screw tightening that cuts the insulation as it is screwed in. Used on some terminal blocks and connection terminals.
Recommended use: signals and low power
Self-stripping terminals are particularly suitable for:
- Signaling wiring — sensors, remote controls, indicator lights
- Small accessories (rearview camera, pressure sensor, portable GPS)
- Temporary or comfort installations
- Quick roadside repairs
For circuits carrying high currents (> 10 A), such as powering an additional headlight or a winch, traditional crimping on stripped cable remains the most reliable long-term solution — especially in vibrating environments where contact quality is critical.
Choosing the right cross-section
Like all terminals, self-stripping ones are sized by cable cross-section (red 0.5–1.5mm², blue 1.5–2.5mm²). Make sure the cable cross-section is compatible with the terminal's range — a terminal that is too large will not properly pinch the insulation and will not cut cleanly to the conductor, creating a poor connection.
