Long-life bulbs: invest to save
A standard halogen bulb lasts on average 500 to 1,000 hours. A long-life bulb (Heavy Duty range) often exceeds 2,000 to 3,000 hours, which is 2 to 3 times more. How? Three technical improvements:
- Reinforced filament with a denser tungsten alloy that is more resistant to vibrations
- Higher pressure internal gas which slows down filament sublimation
- High-temperature treated glass to withstand repeated thermal cycles
Slightly higher initial investment (10 to 30% more than a conventional halogen), but quickly amortized in a few months for intensive use — fewer replacements, less time wasted, less risk of roadside breakdowns.
For what use?
Heavy Duty bulbs are particularly suitable for:
- Taxis and VTCs — continuous use, constant illumination in urban and night driving
- Delivery vehicles and light commercial vehicles — frequent shocks and vibrations that prematurely wear out standard bulbs
- High-mileage drivers (sales representatives, transporters, drivers >50,000 km/year) — multiplied lifespan = spaced-out replacements
- Ambulances, emergency vehicles — critical reliability during missions
- Professional fleets — optimized maintenance cost for the entire fleet
- Motorcycles and scooters with permanent lighting — the bulb is stressed from the moment the vehicle starts
Long-life vs. LED: which to choose?
LEDs offer an even longer lifespan (5,000 to 50,000 hours) and reduced consumption. If a CE approved LED is available for your base type, it remains the best long-term investment. But long-life halogen still has advantages in several cases:
- Older vehicles without CAN-Bus system, where switching to LED requires accessories (resistors, suppressors)
- Base types not available in approved LED (some old or specific references)
- Headlights with halogen optics not compatible with LED kits — keeping long-life halogen avoids any problem of misdirected beam
- Immediate economical solution without having to invest in a complete LED kit
