Butt Connector: repair or extend without redoing the harness
The butt connector (or cable splice) joins two cables into a permanent, reliable, and compact connection. It is essential for:
- Repairing a cut cable — accident, rubbing against a moving part, rodent attack (a common problem in rural areas)
- Extending a cable that is too short when installing an accessory (new, more remote car radio, antenna, sensor)
- Recreating a simple branch circuit without using a multi-pin connector
Crimping both ends ensures a mechanically and electrically solid connection — lifespan equivalent to that of the cable itself.
Standard or heat-shrink butt connector: which to choose?
- Standard (rigid plastic insulation) → dry indoor wiring only (cabin, dashboard). Economical, quick installation.
- Heat-shrink (polyolefin sleeve + internal adhesive) → all outdoor, under-body, or wet area wiring. The sleeve shrinks under heat (heat gun) and the internal adhesive melts to hermetically seal the connection. Water resistance (IP67), oil, salt, and vibration resistant.
For a car installation that needs to last, the heat-shrink version is a worthwhile investment — especially for vehicles driven in winter (de-icing salts) or in marine areas.
Respect the cable gauge
The connector must be sized for the gauge of the cables to be joined: red (0.5–1.5mm²), blue (1.5–2.5mm²), yellow (4–6mm²). The splice must have zero electrical resistance — an undersized connector will heat up and create a voltage drop that will manifest as dim lighting or equipment that malfunctions.
