The W16W bulb: white reversing lights
The W16W is a 16-watt bulb with a W2.1×9.5d base, primarily used for reversing lights. These white lights turn on automatically when reverse gear is engaged, signaling the maneuver to other road users and illuminating the area behind the vehicle.
The W16W is found on almost all recent European cars (since around 2005) for this function. It is gradually replacing the P21W (metal bayonet base) in this application — a more compact, lighter, more modern plastic base.
W16W LED: the advantages
- Much more intense cool white light than a 16W halogen — better visibility during night maneuvers, particularly useful for reversing in the city or in dark parking lots.
- Immediate response time — the halogen has a warm-up time before reaching full power.
- 10× longer lifespan — a W16W LED lasts almost the entire life of the vehicle.
- No homologation constraint for reversing lights — free replacement, unlike main headlights.
Canbus or standard?
Recent vehicles (post-2010 in general) have an electronic control unit that monitors the consumption of each bulb. Typical case:
- A standard W16W LED consumes less than the original halogen.
- The control unit interprets this as a burned-out bulb and illuminates an error warning light.
Solution: integrated canbus W16W LED (built-in load resistor). No errors, plug & play. For older vehicles (before 2005), a standard LED generally works without problems.
W16W vs W5W: do not confuse
The W5W (5W, parking lights/number plate) and the W16W (16W, reversing) have the same type of visual base but are not interchangeable: the W16W is physically larger and much more powerful. Do not try to substitute one for the other — the W5W will not fit in a W16W holder and vice-versa.
