Spade terminal: tool-free disconnectable connection
The spade terminal (also called a "fork" or U-shaped terminal) is distinguished from the ring terminal by its open, U-shaped end. This open space allows the terminal to be inserted or removed under the head of a screw without having to fully remove it — a valuable advantage for connections that are regularly opened.
Typical uses: regulator terminals, relay terminals, connections for disconnectable accessories, maintenance points on the electrical harness, frequent adding/removing of equipment (e.g., on a racing vehicle or modified vehicle).
Spade or ring: when to choose one over the other?
Choice according to connection type:
- Ring (closed loop) → permanent connection exposed to vibrations (ground, battery, alternator). The closed loop cannot detach.
- Spade (open U-shape) → disconnectable connection, regular access, easier maintenance. To be avoided in areas of high vibration without strong tightening.
Both types are crimped in the same way and use the same cross-section color code: red (0.5–1.5mm²), blue (1.5–2.5mm²), yellow (4–6mm²).
Choosing the right spade diameter
The opening width of the spade must match the screw diameter: M4, M5, M6, M8. If the opening is too narrow, the spade will not fit over the screw. If the opening is too wide, the contact will be unstable and risk slipping under vibration. For standard automotive use (relays, common accessories), the M5–M6 diameter covers 80% of needs.
