The B8.xd family: BMW and Volvo indicator lights

The B8.xd base (where x = 3, 4, or 5) encompasses several base lengths for BMW, Volvo, and some Asian car dashboards. The number indicates the base length in millimeters:

• B8.3d — 3 mm length — most compact indicator lights
• B8.4d — 4 mm — intermediate size
• B8.5d — 5 mm — most common on BMW and Volvo

Applicable Vehicles

• BMW — 3 Series (E30, E36, E46), 5 Series (E34, E39, E60), 7 Series (E32, E38), X3, X5
• Volvo — 740, 940, S60, S70, V70, S80
• Certain Asian models that have adopted this format
• Some older Saab and Land Rover models

Identifying your B8.xd

Remove the original bulb and measure the base length (the cylindrical metal part) with calipers:

• 3 mm = B8.3d
• 4 mm = B8.4d
• 5 mm = B8.5d

The marking is sometimes indicated on the bulb, but it may be worn on older vehicles — physical measurement remains the most reliable method.

B8.xd LED: Modernizing your indicator lights

B8.xd LEDs are available in all lengths and several colors:

• Cool white for a modern look
• Warm white to retain the original appearance
• Specific colors (red, amber) for customization

For BMWs with advanced CAN-Bus (5 Series E60 and beyond), CAN-bus LED is mandatory — otherwise the computer will display a persistent dashboard error.
