Female spade terminal: the universal quick connection
The female spade terminal (clip) receives the flat male tab of the equipment to be connected. The spring mechanism integrated into the clip holds the tab in place with a stable clamping force, even under vibration. Detachable with a simple gesture without tools — it is the most used connection in automotive electricity, both in original wiring and in accessory installation.
Choosing the right spade terminal width
Three standard widths depending on the application:
- 2.8mm — small equipment and signals: dashboard lighting, certain miniature relays, sensors.
- 4.8mm — the most common automotive standard: relays (Bosch, Tyco), horns, door switches, solenoid valves. A must-have in stock.
- 6.3mm — high-power equipment: audio connectors, cooling fans, gear motors (window lifters, wipers).
Male and female must be the same width to fit together correctly — a 4.8mm will not fit into a 6.3mm.
Insulated or uninsulated spade terminals
- Insulated (red/blue/yellow colored plastic sleeve) → recommended for installations exposed to humidity or vibrations. The sleeve protects the contact and indicates the cable cross-section.
- Uninsulated (tinned copper without insulation) → used when inserted into an original plastic connector that already provides insulation and retention.
