The R2 Bulb: Classic Motorcycle Sealed Beam Headlight
The R2 format is a dual-beam sealed beam headlight: the headlight glass, reflector, and 2 filaments (low beam + high beam) form an indissociable glass unit. When a filament burns out, the entire headlight is replaced, not just the bulb.
This format was standard on motorcycles from the 1960s-1985s: Honda CB350/400/750, Yamaha RD250/350, Kawasaki KH500, Suzuki GT, Norton Commando, BSA, certain Triumphs and Moto Guzzis. This format was also found on old military and utility vehicles.
Why the sealed beam format disappeared
The sealed beam had two major drawbacks:
- High replacement cost — the entire optical unit must be changed rather than a simple bulb
- Impossible to combine halogen and clear plastic — modern halogen technology requires a removable intermediate glass
It was gradually replaced by headlights with removable bulbs (H4) starting in the 1970s-80s. Today, the R2 remains essential for the restoration of vintage motorcycles that must retain their original appearance for historical value.
R2: where to find it?
The R2 is virtually impossible to find in mass distribution. Norauto, Feu Vert, and car chains no longer stock this format. Only classic motorcycle specialists and suppliers dedicated to restoration keep it in stock.
Pharos Boutique offers R2 in:
- R2 12V — motorcycles from the 1970s-1985s
- R2 6V — motorcycles before 1970 (check your vehicle's voltage)
- R2 selective yellow — for vintage French vehicles (yellow headlight obligation 1936-1993)
