Red terminals: the color code for thin cables

In automotive electrics, the color of the insulation of a crimp terminal indicates the allowable cable cross-section. Red corresponds to cross-sections of 0.5 to 1.5mm², the thinnest used in automotive applications. This ISO 2770 standard is universal — all terminal manufacturers respect it, regardless of the type of terminal (ring, faston, bullet…).

⚠️ Using a red terminal on a thicker cable (above 1.5mm²) creates insufficient contact — the terminal does not grip the cable enough, the crimp is incomplete, the contact unstable. Conversely, a blue or yellow terminal on a thin cable leaves too much play, and the cable can come out.

For what uses should thin-section terminals be used?

Cables from 0.5 to 1.5mm² are used for:

• Electronic signals (sensors, buttons, remote controls, CAN/LIN communication)
• Dashboard indicator lights and warning lights
• Small LED accessories (ambient lighting, LED ceiling lights, license plate)
• Light 12V horns, buzzers, sound alarms
• Control cables (switches, contactors)

These cables are not suitable for powering high-power equipment (main headlights, power window motors, fans) which require a larger cross-section (blue 2.5mm² or yellow 6mm²).
