48V Lighting for Forklifts
The vast majority of electric forklifts (3-5 ton counterbalance, reach trucks, high-capacity electric pallet trucks) operate at 48 volts—an intermediate voltage between the 24V of heavy goods vehicles and the high voltages of heavy industrial machinery. Lighting is a safety obligation at work, particularly:
- In warehouses with partial lighting (dark aisles, high storage areas)
- During night work or evening/night shifts
- On outdoor loading docks, in bad weather
- In refrigerated areas where lighting is deliberately limited
Spotlights and Work Lights
Two distinct types of lighting on a forklift:
- Driving lights—illuminate the path in front of the forklift (similar to car headlights but 48V). Allow the operator to see where they are going.
- Work lights—directly illuminate the working area: forks, the ground at the foot of the forklift, goods being loaded. Often adjustable and installed on the roof or mast.
Selection criteria: luminous flux (in lumens—the higher, the better the visibility), beam angle (narrow for a spot, wide for an area), shock and vibration resistance (essential for a forklift in intensive use).
LED technology is gradually replacing halogen on forklift lights—10× longer lifespan, 5× lower consumption (important for electric batteries), instant ignition even in extreme cold.
Preventive Maintenance
For fleet managers and warehouse maintenance managers, having spare spotlights in stock prevents downtime for productive forklifts. A forklift with a burnt-out light must legally remain idle until replaced—immediate loss of productivity. Anticipate with local stock.
