Why have a spare bulb kit in your car
Several concrete reasons:
- Legal obligation in some European countries (Spain, certain regions of Germany, Czech Republic...) - a set of spare bulbs must be in the vehicle.
- Personal safety: a blown headlight bulb at 10 PM on a deserted road turns an ordinary journey into a breakdown. With a kit in the trunk, replacement takes 5 minutes.
- Saving on fines: driving with a blown bulb can cost €68 to €135. A spare kit costs a fraction of that amount.
What a spare bulb kit contains
Typical composition of a complete kit:
- 2 headlight bulbs (H4 or H7 depending on your vehicle)
- 1 P21W bulb for turn signal or reverse light
- 1 P21/5W bulb for combined tail light + brake light
- 1 R5W bulb for sidelight
- 1 W5W bulb for parking light or license plate light
- Often: 2 fuses (10 A and 15 A) to complete the troubleshooting
The kit is stored in a compact plastic box that fits into the glove compartment or trunk.
Bulb kit or individual purchase?
Advantages of the kit compared to buying individually:
- Grouped price often lower than the sum of individual bulbs
- All-in-one: no forgotten references
- Time-saving when purchasing (a single order)
- Organized storage in a labeled box
For a professional fleet (company, taxi, VTC), a kit per vehicle ensures that no journey is interrupted by a faulty bulb.
