Male spade connector: the crimp tab

The male spade connector consists of a rectangular flat tab that fits into the corresponding female clip. It is crimped onto the end of the cable and forms the "equipment" side of the disconnectable connection. Widely used for making or repairing accessory wiring that needs to be easily removable.

Choosing the right width

As with the female, there are three standard widths:

  • 2.8mm — for small equipment and low current signals.
  • 4.8mm — the most common width in automotive applications (standard relays, horns, solenoid valves, contactors).
  • 6.3mm — for high-power equipment and audio connections.

The width of the male connector must absolutely match that of the female connector — check the existing equipment before ordering a replacement male connector.

Insulated vs. uninsulated versions

Male spade connectors come in two versions:

  • Insulated with colored plastic sleeves (red/blue/yellow depending on the cross-section) — protect the contact and facilitate visual identification. Recommended for exposed installations.
  • Uninsulated tinned copper without insulation — used in original multi-pin plastic connectors that provide insulation and locking.
