Finding your bulb by base: the fastest method

The base (or socket) is the standardized reference that identifies both the mechanical shape of the bulb and its electrical connection. H7, BA15S, W5W are international standards — regardless of the manufacturer, an H7 base is always an H7 base.

To identify your base, you have two options: consult the vehicle manual (each light is referenced there) or remove the used bulb (the type is engraved on the glass or the base). This is the most reliable method, with no risk of error or returns.

Headlight bases — H1, H3, H4, H7, H11 and beyond

Headlights concentrate the most widespread bases. The H4 (dual-beam low+high beam in a single bulb) equips the majority of vehicles before 2010. The H7 (low beam only) is currently the best-selling in Europe on recent vehicles.

The H1 and H3 often equip fog lights and some high beam lights. The H8, H9, H11, H16 cover headlights from the 2000-2010 generation. The HB3 (9005) and HB4 (9006) are the standards for Asian vehicles. The H15 combines high beams and daytime running lights on modern VAGs (Audi, Volkswagen). Signaling — BA15S, BAY15D, P21W, W21W

Signaling lights use bayonet bases. The BA15S (single contact, symmetrical pins) equips turn signals and simple parking lights. The BAY15D (asymmetrical bi-contact) manages dual functions stop + position in a single bulb (P21/5W). The BAU15S (PY21W) equips orange turn signals. For recent vehicles, the W21W and W21/5W (T20) with plastic bases are gradually replacing bayonets for reverse lights and modern dual-function lights.

Interior and dashboard — W5W, C5W, T5, EBS

The cabin is full of small, discreet bases. The W5W (T10) is universal for parking lights, dome lights, and license plate lights. C5W festoon bulbs (in 31 mm, 36 mm or 42 mm lengths) illuminate traditional dome lights.

The dashboard uses miniature bases: T3, T4, T5, T6.5 (wedge base) for standard indicator lights. For premium vehicles, proprietary bases B8.5d, EBS, BAX10d equip indicator lights from VAG, BMW, Mercedes or Citroën DS — rare references that Pharos keeps in stock while most distributors have abandoned them.

Old bases — P45t, BA20D, S2, R2, E10

Formats that large retailers have abandoned: P45t and R2 (European Code) for sealed headlights of vintage cars, BA20D and S2 for old motorcycles, E10 screw-in for industrial vehicles and some dashboard lighting from before 1980.
