Choosing the color of your LED bulbs

Two concepts not to be confused: the color of the bulb base (the mechanical base of the bulb, which is metallic) and the color of the light emitted (what you see when it's lit). The latter is what creates the visual effect.

For white light, the shade is expressed in Kelvin (K):

• 3,000–4,000 K — warm white, slightly yellow (close to standard halogen)
• 4,000–5,000 K — neutral white (daylight)
• 5,500–6,500 K — cool white, slightly bluish ("xenon" effect)
• 6,500 K and above — blue/violet (tuning effect, not recommended for driving)

For vivid colors (amber, red, green, blue), the shade comes either from the colored glass of the bulb or directly from the LED.

White, orange, red: regulated exterior colors

The Highway Code imposes precise colors for exterior lights. Any other color results in a fine and can cause the vehicle to fail its technical inspection:

• Parking lights and license plate light: white only
• Turn signals: orange/amber mandatory
• Brake lights: red only
• Reversing lights: white only
• Front fog lights: white or selective yellow only
• Rear fog lights: red only

Blue, green, multi-colored: for interior use only

Vivid colors (blue, green, violet, multi-colored RGB) are authorized only inside the vehicle, as long as they are not visible from the outside. You can thus light in blue:

• The dome light and reading light
• The dashboard (speedometer, car radio, air conditioning)
• The door sills (interior sill LEDs)
• The trunk light and glove compartment light

Beware of blue parking lights: installing a blue LED in an exterior parking light is illegal.

Personalize your cabin

Some ideas for colorful arrangements: cool white parking lights (6,000 K) for a modern look, neutral white dome light (5,000 K) for reading, red dashboard for night driving (color that is least tiring for the eyes), blue door sills for an ambient effect. For a modest cost, the visual rendering is immediately noticeable.
