6-volt bulbs: why they are so hard to find

6-volt vehicles were produced until approximately the 1980s, before the widespread switch to 12-volt systems that now equip all new motorcycles. Large auto parts stores and specialized chains gradually stopped stocking 6V references—unprofitable given the low volume of general public demand.

Which vehicles operate on 6 volts?

• Mopeds: Peugeot 103, MBK 51, Solex, Motobécane AV88, Gitane Testi
• Motor scooters: MBK Magnum, Peugeot 102, some Honda and Yamaha from before 1980
• Classic motorcycles: French and Italian motorcycles from before 1985 (Motobécane, Gilera, old Vespas)
• Vintage scooters: Vespa 50, some Lambrettas

On a vehicle equipped with 6V, installing a 12V bulb will produce almost no light (undervoltage). Conversely, installing a 6V bulb on a 12V vehicle will immediately burn out the bulb due to overvoltage. Always check the voltage indicated on the manufacturer's plate or battery.

Halogen or LED in 6V?

6V halogen bulbs are available in all common bases: H4 6V for headlights, BA15S 6V for turn signals and taillights, BA9s 6V for interior dome lights, R5W 6V for parking lights.

6V LEDs exist and offer a longer lifespan. One precaution: on older vehicles with a dynamo (instead of a modern alternator), the voltage fluctuates with engine speed—check the electronic compatibility of the LED with your system. On some mopeds, a diode bridge or voltage regulator may be necessary.

Finding your 6V base

Remove the faulty bulb: the voltage (6V) and the base are etched on the glass or metal base. On very old vehicles without legible markings, measure the dimensions of the base and compare with our catalog—we can help you identify the reference based on the make and model.
