Motorcycle Headlight Bulbs: Halogen or LED?

Standard Halogen: The universal solution. Compatible with all motorcycles, affordable price, simple replacement in minutes. Choose long-life versions (reinforced anti-vibration filament) — particularly useful on motorcycles where shocks and vibrations are constant.

Approved LED: 2 to 3 times brighter, modern white light, 5 to 10 times longer lifespan. CE homologation required since 2023 for main headlight replacement — a non-approved LED may result in a failed motorcycle technical inspection.

The H4 Base: Essential for Motorcycles

The H4 equips the majority of modern motorcycles and scooters. Its advantage: two filaments in a single bulb — one for the low beam (55W), one for the high beam (60W). P43t base with 3 tabs. Available in standard halogen, long-life (Heavy Duty), and LED.

On older motorcycles (pre-1985), you can also find BA15S for the single-filament front headlight — a 15mm single-contact bayonet base.

Vibration Resistance: A Motorcycle Requirement

Motorcycle bulbs endure 3 to 5 times more vibrations than car bulbs, and their low beam remains constantly on from engine start. These constraints shorten their lifespan. Heavy Duty / Long Life bulbs (reinforced filament, higher pressure gas) are specifically designed for these conditions — they last 2 to 3 times longer than a standard halogen bulb.

Finding the Right Bulb for Your Motorcycle

Three checks before ordering:

• Voltage: 12V for modern motorcycles (approx. post-1985), 6V for older motorcycles, mopeds, and scooters — see our dedicated 6V range.
• Base Type: H4 on most modern motorcycles, BA15S on some vintage models.
• Wattage: Standard 60/55W for H4 — never install a wattage higher than the original.
