Position lights and motorcycle speedometer: which bases?
Three families of bulbs equip the non-primary lighting of a motorcycle:
- Position lights — generally W5W (T10), 5 W, wedge format without bayonet base.
- Dashboard indicator lights (speedometer, fuel gauge, indicators) — in W1.2W or T5, 1.2 W, see our T5 indicator light range.
- Speedometer lighting — variable base depending on the motorcycle (often T5 or BA9s).
W5W and T10: two names, one bulb
As on a car, W5W and T10 refer to exactly the same bulb. The T10 designation refers to the physical format (tubular, 10 mm diameter), W5W is the CEE electrical designation (Wedge, 5W, tungsten). You can buy either one interchangeably — it's the same product.
Universal format for modern motorcycle position lights (post-2000 approximately).
Converting your motorcycle position lights to LED
Converting motorcycle position lights to LED provides:
- A more visible pure white light (standard halogen tends to be yellow)
- A lifespan 5 to 10 times longer than halogen — a real gain for motorcycles with permanent lighting
- Negligible battery consumption
Compatible with the majority of modern motorcycles with direct connection. On very recent models with CAN-Bus management (BMW, KTM, some Ducatis), choose a CANbus LED to avoid the dashboard error light.
Finding your base
Remove the faulty bulb and read the marking on the base ("W5W 12V 5W" or "T5 12V 1.2W"). If in doubt, consult the motorcycle manual which lists the bulb for each light.
