Tap Connector: Add a wire in 30 seconds
The tap connector (often called by its generic brand names Scotchlok or Wire-Tap) is the natural evolution of the quick splice connector. Designed to easily add a wire to an existing cable, it allows power to be tapped for a new accessory without touching the original harness.
Key advantages:
- No stripping required
- No cutting of the source cable
- Installation with universal pliers, no special tools needed
- Connection insulated directly by the plastic casing
When to use a tap connector?
Typical cases:
- Installation of a car radio or hands-free kit → tap into the +12V of the door
- Adding LED license plate lights → tap into the existing lighting cable
- Connecting a backup camera → tap into the reverse light
- Installation of a GPS repeater or dashcam → tap into the permanent 12V
Limitations — low current only
Like all non-stripping connectors, the tap connector is reserved for low currents (typically < 5–7 A). For more power-hungry accessories (compressor, winch, spotlight), use a relay with classic crimping. Also avoid using on CAN and LIN buses, where adding a load can disrupt ECU communications.
Color code
Like other terminals, the color code indicates the cross-section: red for 0.5–1.5mm² (most common in car signaling), blue for 1.5–2.5mm². Check the cross-section of your source cable before choosing.
