What is a Blue Spot projector?
The Blue Spot is an adjustable LED projector mounted on the front or rear of a forklift. It projects a blue light spot onto the ground approximately 5 to 10 meters in front of or behind the forklift, depending on its orientation. This blue spot moves with the forklift — it becomes a mobile visual signal that is impossible to miss.
A key advantage: the Blue Spot is visible before the forklift itself arrives, giving pedestrians time to move to safety.
Why the Blue Spot is essential in warehouses
In a warehouse, forklifts and pedestrians often share the same aisles. The risk of accidents is high — standard EN 1726 and CNAM (Caisse Nationale d'Assurance Maladie) recommendations strongly advocate the use of the Blue Spot in several situations:
- Noisy areas (production, workshop) where the reversing beeper is inaudible
- Blind spots and aisle intersections
- High-level storage areas where direct visibility is reduced
- 3×8 shifts with less vigilant night crews
- Hearing-impaired employees or those wearing mandatory earplugs
Several studies (INRS, logistics sector) have shown that installing Blue Spots reduces forklift-pedestrian collision incidents by 60 to 80%.
Selection criteria for a 48V Blue Spot
- Light intensity — for a spot visible even in daylight in a lit warehouse, aim for at least 800 to 1,200 lumens
- Color — pure blue is the standard color (red and green also exist but are less recommended)
- Shock resistance — IP67 or higher casing, vibration compliant with EN 60068
- LED lifespan — 30,000 to 50,000 hours for industrial-grade LED
- Adjustable orientation — to adjust the spot distance according to mounting height
Installation and maintenance
The Blue Spot is installed by screwing it onto the roof, counterweight, or mast feet. 48V wiring should be connected in parallel with the reverse lights (the Blue Spot illuminates with reverse gear, like the audible beeper). Minimal maintenance thanks to LED technology — a monthly visual check is sufficient.
