The T5 bulb: dashboard backlighting
The T5 (also known as W1.2W) is a miniature 1.2W bulb dedicated to dashboard backlighting, speedometers, and secondary instrumentation indicator lights. Its compact size allows it to fit into the narrow housings of modern and older dashboards.
It is an interior bulb and is not used for exterior vehicle lighting — therefore, there are no legal constraints on color or brightness. All customizations are permitted as long as the light does not escape to the outside.
Which color of T5 LED to choose?
The key advantage of the T5 LED: color freedom to customize the ambiance of your dashboard:
- Cool White (6,000 K) — modern and sleek look, premium feel
- Warm White (3,500 K) — closer to the original halogen, discreet and natural
- Blue — sporty or high-end effect, very popular in car customization
- Green — reminiscent of old green-background gauges, nostalgic
- Red — racing ambiance — needs to be well-adapted so as not to hinder the readability of vital information
- Amber — warm and retro, perfect for classic vehicles
How to replace your T5s?
T5s are located behind the dashboard — accessing them usually requires removing the speedometer (a few screws, process varies depending on the vehicle). The replacement itself is simple: extract the old bulb, insert the LED. Tip: replace all T5s on the dashboard at once for homogeneous lighting — one color, same intensity everywhere, avoids annoying discrepancies.
T5 or W1.2W: same bulb, two names
T5 is the size designation (5 mm tube), W1.2W is the power designation (1.2 watts). Both terms refer to the same dashboard bulb format — check that the wedge base matches your housing.
